Product Description

Foam rubber is found in a wide range of applications, from cushioning in automobile seats and furniture to insulation in walls and appliances to soles and heels in footwear. Foams are made by forming gas bubbles in a plastic mixture, with the use of a blowing agent. Foam manufacture is either a continuous process for making laminate or slabstock or a batch process for making various shapes by cutting or molding. Timco Rubber's foam rubber products offer cost-effective sealing and cushioning solutions. PVC foam (polyvinyl chloride) provides:

  • Resistance to UV, weathering, fungi and oxidation
  • Resistance to many solvents and chemicals
  • Ability to be laminated
  • Can be supplied with pressure sensitive adhesives

Types of Foam

There are two basic types of foam:

  1. Flexible foams — These foam rubber materials have an open cell structure and can be produced in both low and high densities
    • Typically made using the carbon dioxide formed during the reaction of water with isocyanate as a blowing agent
    Applications include:
    • Cushioning for furniture and automobiles
    • Automotive trim
    • Shoe soling
  2. Rigid foams — are highly cross-linked polymers with a closed cell structure that prevents gas movement
    • Rigid Foams use hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs), hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), and pentanes as blowing agents
    Primary applications include insulation parts for:
    • Buildings
    • Refrigerators
    • Freezers
    • Refrigerated transport vehicles

PVC Foam

PVC foam is used in many applications to seal out air, condensation, light, and dust when compressed. Foam rubber products can provide cushioning, vibration dampening as well as sound dampening. Foam material also exhibits the ability to conform to irregular surfaces and curves, allowing it to be used as a stuffer.

PVC Foam is an excellent material for filling larger voids and variable gaps. It displays certain physical and chemical resistance properties that make it an excellent material to be used in foam rubber tubes. These properties include inherent resistances to:

Silicone Foam

Sheet materials made of silicone foam are cast from liquid silicone compounds which are catalyzed, mixed rapidly and cast onto a release liner to be cured at an elevated temperature. Silicone foam can be open cell in a soft, low density grade or medium and higher density closed cell grades that can effectively function as gaskets or sealing agents. Silicone foams can be made to exhibit a smooth surface on one or both surfaces and many silicone foam materials will pass UL94 flame ratings.
